Tough times calls out farmers’ true value

This is a summary of the article, written by Steve Cubbage — Global Pandemic Exposes Need For Healthy American Farmers — posted in the online issue of AgPro.

Tough times often point out the overlooked obvious values that we all take for granted.

In this issue of AgPro, Steve Cubbage, guest columnist and Farmobile’s vice president of services, discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic is teaching Americans some pretty hard lessons about national reliance on China and others for pharmaceutical technologies vital to health care.

One thing is certain, however, that two of the United States’ greatest superpowers are food and fuel. He notes that, as a nation, we are strongly positioned when it comes to the domestic production capabilities of both the energy and agricultural sectors of the economy.

Ironically, farmers, who have undergone economic duress,  are to thank for this strength.

“When it comes to food and fiber production within the United States the American farmer can still take pride in the fact that collectively they produce enough not only to feed their nation but also many outside it as well. What is concerning is that the overall health of production agriculture in the U.S. is not nearly as vibrant and healthy as it should be. If you wanted to describe it in medical terms you would say that the production agriculture sector of the U.S. is in a ‘weakened state.’”
