As most of you already know, I’m a passionate advocate for farmers and #FarmerPower. Over the past several decades, farming has become an even tougher job, with slimming margins and even greater regulatory oversight. That’s why I was eager to join Matt Brechwald on his podcast Off Farm Income. Matt is a farmer and ag entrepreneurship coach based in Kuna, Idaho, who runs a podcast that is focused on bringing farmers new opportunities to generate revenue on and off the farm and make their small business goals a reality.

In this episode, Matt and I talk about the different opportunities that come with having a comprehensive digital strategy on the farm. High quality, layered data and real-time visualizations across a mixed-fleet of equipment enable farmers to turn the raw data coming off their fields into real insights that lead to better yields, higher efficiency, and higher profitability for the farmer and their business.

Of course, anyone who is familiar with my company Farmobile knows that data value doesn’t stop there. It’s been my hunch for a long time that the data coming off farmers’ machines would be valuable to lots of people and businesses, from researchers and input companies to commodities traders.

At Farmobile, we created the DataStore to facilitate this exchange for the benefit of the farmer. Using our DataStore, approved data buyers can search the DataStore and request specific types of agdata, and we bring those offers to our farmers. When farmers receive the offer, they can choose to accept or decline, and always maintain ownership over that data. The best part is, data can be licensed multiple times for a truly infinite commodity that brings revenue onto the farm. It’s something Matt and I both enjoyed discussing, and we hope you will, too.
